A Magazine of Speculative Fiction

Issue #21- April, 2004

It is difficult to compete as a speculative fiction magazine in today's economy. Against great magazines such as SCIFICTION (a market so important every letter MUST BE CAPITALIZED), Strange Horizons (are those east, north, west, or south, relative to San Francisco?), and too many others to name here (thankfully, Ralan has done it for us), how can we stand out? The Fortean Bureau struggles in mortal combat with the best editors in the world to provide you with excellent, free, weird (and did we say free?) content. It's enough to drive an editor mad! Which may explain Gardner Dozois...

The Fortean Bureau staff have put minutes of thought into how we might gain an edge over these fine editors and their magazines, especially given that we are going quarterly as of May. Finally, we got drunk enough to see what no editor has seen before. Famous, well-established writers (meaning, writers we couldn't afford in a hundred years) are producing thousands-well, hundreds-of words that no readers outside their innermost circles have seen. Until now....
