Cthulhu Statuette Lovecraft makes reference to several macabre statuettes of an enormous, extra-dimensional creature in his 1926 novelette, The Call of Cthulhu. One of the so-called "Great Old Ones," Cthulhu and his minions migrated to Earth during the reign of the dinosaurs and built a megalithic city on an island in the Southeast Pacific. After centuries-long warfare with other non-humanoid colonists, the island/city sank amidst great tectonic upheavals; imprisoning the immortal "…green, sticky spawn of the stars…" for uncounted millennia. A group of 20th century seamen accidentally encounter the island - which was thrust to the surface by an earthquake - and inadvertently release the dreaded Cthulhu. Luckily for mankind, the mountain-sized monstrosity is trapped within his stone citadel when the island once again sinks beneath the waves.
